The cars are small electric motors. The engine power is provided by the length available. On both sides of the guide groove in the track are the metal strips that conduct electric current. The car has an axis that goes into the slot, but only lead to the car. There are a number of tabs or wire brushes on each side of the pin. These chips are in contact with the metal strip on the runway and the removal of the power to monitor the engine performance. The amount of power going to the track is controlled by a hand throttle. The power to drive faster than the car. If the car loses contact with metal strips on the track, the engine is turned off.
All this power is running low voltage so innocuous, if you like metal strips on contact.
